Brampton, Tuesday April 7, 2009. The Optimist Club of Brampton will hold its 21st Annual Junior Qualifying Golf Tourney at Castlemore Golf & Country Club on Sunday, June 7, 2009. All youth (boys and girls) aged 10-18 can compete. Eighteen-year-olds must not turn 19 before August 3, 2008. Age groups for competition are as follows:

   10-11 Years
   12-13 Years
   14-15 Years
   16-18 Years

A winner will receive a trophy in each age group provided there are a minimum of six players in the age group. The top golfer in each age group will also be sent to the Central Ontario District Tourney to be held on Monday, June 22, 2009 at Caledon Country Club in Caledon. The top two scorers in the 16-18 group at Caledon will qualify for an all expenses-paid trip to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships to be held July 23 – August 2, 2009 at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The category winners on June 22, 2009 in the other age groups may also qualify, at their own expense, for the Florida tourney, based on their scores at Caledon.

Tiger Woods, six-time winner of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships, had this to say about Optimist Junior Golf:

“It was an important part of my golf development as a child. The chance to compete at that high a level against other strong junior golfers was not one that I had often, so I always appreciated the opportunities that I had to compete in the tournament. I was fortunate to win six times at the Optimist Junior World of Golf Tournament, and each one of those wins was a very important stepping stone in my playing career.”

Cost for Brampton residents is $50.00 per golfer, which includes 18 holes, lunch, awards banquet, and prizes. The registration is limited to the first 40 golfers from the Brampton area who submit paid registrations. Deadline for registrations is Friday, May 29, 2009.
